What's the difference between recorded and live languages in Slate?

Recorded transcription is what Slate does when you stop recording, or when you import an audio or video file: it writes a transcript with speaker labels and timestamps, and a summary you can search and ask questions about. Slate does this in 99 languages.

Live transcription and translation happen while people talk: words appear as they're spoken and the translation appears next to them. Slate does this in 62 languages, all of which also work for recordings.

How does live translation work in Slate?

Choose the language being spoken and the one you want to read, then start recording. Slate shows the transcript and the translation side by side, line by line, with speakers labelled. Live transcription and translation are available for the languages marked live in the table above.

The translation is text on your screen, next to the original. Slate doesn't speak it aloud.

What do I need to use Slate in another language?

To use Slate in another language, you need an iPhone with iOS 18 or later, an Apple Watch with watchOS 11 or later, or a Mac with macOS 14 or later, plus a free Slate account. Live translation works on any iPhone with iOS 18 or later and doesn't need Apple Intelligence. Pick the language being spoken before you record. For live translation, also pick the language you want to read, and Slate shows the original and the translation side by side. Slate records in any language without an internet connection, but transcription and translation, in every language, need internet. Every listed language is included on the free plan, within 100 free minutes a month. If your language isn't listed, email developer@ravenna.digital.

Are all languages included on Slate's free plan?

Yes. Every language Slate supports is included on the free plan: recording, transcription and live translation in every listed language work within your 100 free minutes a month. That covers transcription of recordings in all 99 languages and live transcription and translation in all 62 live languages, on iPhone, Apple Watch and Mac. The minutes reset every month, and you keep every note and transcript you've already made. Slate Pro removes the monthly limit. It costs $19.99 a month or $69.99 billed yearly, in USD, and one Pro plan covers iPhone, Apple Watch and Mac at the same price. See Slate pricing for details.
