How it works

How do you record a voice memo on Apple Watch with Slate?

The Slate Apple Watch app comes with Slate for iPhone. There's nothing extra to buy or set up: install Slate on your iPhone, sign in, and open Slate on your watch. To record a voice memo, open Slate on your Apple Watch and tap once to start. The watch shows a running timer, and one more tap stops the recording. Slate then sends the recording to your iPhone automatically. If your iPhone isn't nearby, Slate keeps recording on the watch and syncs when you're back. On your iPhone, Slate transcribes the recording in any of 99 languages, with speaker labels, and writes a summary with key points and action items. You can ask Slate questions about it, or share it as text or PDF. Slate needs watchOS 11 or later on the watch and iOS 18 or later on the iPhone.

Open Slate on your Apple Watch and tap to start. The watch shows a running timer, and one more tap stops the recording. It's handy when your hands are full.

02

It syncs by itself

Slate sends the recording to your iPhone automatically. If your iPhone isn't nearby, Slate keeps recording on the watch and syncs when you're back.

03

Read, ask, share

On your iPhone, Slate transcribes the recording with speaker labels and writes a summary with key points and action items. Ask it questions, or share it as text or PDF.

Without your iPhone

Can Slate record on Apple Watch without the iPhone nearby?

Yes. Slate records on the Apple Watch itself, so you can start a recording with one tap on your wrist even when your iPhone isn't nearby, for a quick idea, a voice memo or a hallway chat. The watch keeps recording on its own, and recording doesn't need an internet connection. When you're back near your iPhone, Slate syncs the recording to it automatically. Transcription and translation need internet, so Slate transcribes the recording after it reaches your iPhone and you're online. You then get a transcript in any of 99 languages and a summary with key points and action items. Slate on Apple Watch needs watchOS 11 or later, and the watch app comes with Slate for iPhone at no extra cost.

What does Slate do with an Apple Watch recording?

Slate turns each watch recording into a note in the Slate app on your iPhone. Slate transcribes the recording in any of 99 languages, with speaker labels, and writes a summary with key points, priorities and action items that you can read at a glance. Instead of replaying the audio, you can ask Slate a question about the recording and get the answer. Every transcript is searchable: jump to a timestamp, sort recordings into folders, and share a note as text or PDF. The note sits in the same library as everything you record on iPhone and Mac, so a voice memo from your wrist ends up next to your lectures and calls. Sign in on Slate for Mac as well and your watch recordings are there too.
